JSI Tip 6560. When Windows XP connects to the Windows Update site, you receive 'You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update'?

When you connect to the Windows Update site, you receive:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update.

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.

This behavior will occur if the built-in Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is activated and you have Norton Internet Security 2002 installed and activated.

See http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ for information on removing Norton Internet Security 2002.

NOTE: To verify if ICF is activated:

1. Control Panel / Network and Internet Connections / Network Connections.

2. Right-click the appropriate network connection and press Properties.

3. Select the Advanced tab.

4. See if the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet box is checked.
