JSI Tip 6452. When you update a USB 2.0 device driver in Windows XP SP1, USB 1.1 devices stop functioning?

When you use Device Manager to update the device driver of a USB 2.0 controller, the USB 1.1 controllers that are enumerated as separate PCI functions, are disabled and do NOT restart.

To workaround this behavior, you can restart your computer or:

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Use the Action menu to Scan For Hardware Changes.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and mouse, DO NOT use Device Manager to update the driver as you may loose the ability to properly shutdown / restart.
