If you use a Windows 2000 Distributed File System (DFS) server in a Windows NT 4.0 domain, your clients may experience a 5 second delay before they can access the DFS resources, because the Windows 2000 DFS server is trying to obtain a SITE referral from Active Directory so that the clients can acquire resources that are closer on the network.
Microsoft will address this issue in Service Pack 4 (SP4) for Windows 2000.
Once SP4 is installed on the Windows 2000 DFS server:
1. Copy / Paste the following to a DfsDisableSiteAwareness.reg file:
REGEDIT4
\[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dfs\Parameters\]
"DfsDisableSiteAwareness'="1"
2. Open a CMD prompt.
3. Type net stop dfs and press Enter.
4. Type regedit /s DfsDisableSiteAwareness.reg and press Enter.
5. Type net start dfs and press Enter.
