JSI Tip 4469. What is the Dynamic Update feature in Windows XP Setup?

Unlike it's Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT 5.0 (Windows 2000) predecessors, Windows XP Setup contains a Dynamic Update feature which can download critical content to enhance the Setup program.

If the computer can connect to the Internet, you are prompted to download or skip Dynamic Update during Setup.

Dynamic Update includes:

- New and enhanced Microsoft devices drivers.

- Updates for files that exist on the CD-ROM.

- Upgraded .inf (.add, .rep, and .inf) files.

- Winnt32 fixes and Winnt32 dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

NOTE: Dynamic Update is the Setup equivalent of Windows Update.

NOTE: See tip 4468 for deploying Dynamic Update for Windows XP Professional Setup in a corporate environment, without connecting to the Internet.
