JSI Tip 10578. You cannot turn on the Automatic Updates feature on Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Your Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) computer exhibits the following behavior:

- The Automatic Updates feature is turned off in Control Panel / Security Center and you cannot turn it on.

- When you attempt to install updates from the Windows Update Web site, you receive a 0x80070424 error.

- You cannot locate the Automatic Updates service in the Services snap-in.

- One or both of the following registry sub-keys are missing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WUAUSERV

To resolve this problem, install the Automatic Updates feature:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following command and press Enter:

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %SystemRoot%\INF\AU.INF

3. Press the Browse button.

4. Select the %SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. If it is not present, select the i386 folder of a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 installation CD or distribution folder.

5. Press OK to copy the files.

6. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.
