Internet Explorer 11 Gains Improvements for Windows 7 and 8.1 Enterprise Users

When Microsoft released Windows 10 Version 1511 last year they had made a lot of improvements to IE11 in order to give Enterprise users a stable version of IE that would remain a resource for them an not go through significant upgrade cycles. For enterprise use this is important to retain compatibility with Line of Business apps and web based serices.

Well the Microsoft Edge team, who now takes care of Internet Explorer, just shipped these same improvements to Internet Explorer users on Windows 7 and 8.1 users and for those on Version 1507 of Windows 10 (the original Windows 10 release that came out last July).

"To provide a stable environment where compatibility is a top priority, our goal is to keep Internet Explorer 11 consistent, no matter what device or platform you use it on. Today, we are excited to announce that many of these improvements are now available for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (version 1507). These improvements are included in today’s cumulative updates to Windows."

The first improvement is the v.2 XML schema for your companies site compatibility list and the new name of this tool is Enterprise Mode Site List Manager (schema, v.2). It can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

This tool will let you build and maintain your Enterprise Mode Site List which helps you identify site compatibility for your organization.

The second tool released with this weeks patches to Windows is the about:compat page in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

IE11 about:compat page in IE11

about:compat page in Internet Explorer 11

about:compat page in Microsoft Edge

With these upgraded tools for Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10 Version 1511 IT admins should be able to take full advantage of site compatibility options to keep their users working whether they use IE or Edge.

You can learn more about the v.2 schema at the Enterprise Mode schema v.2 guidance TechNet page.
