Microprocessor giant Intel has shipped the first mobile version of its Pentium 4 chip, dubbed the Pentium 4 Processor-M, and some PC makers are already shipping laptops based on the new design. The processor ships in 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz versions and is accompanied by a new chipset that supports 4X AGP graphics, a 400MHz system bus, and as much as 1GB of 266MHz Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory. In short, Intel has pushed mobile computing into uncharted waters, and you can now purchase a mobile system that truly equals the fastest PC desktops.
"The introduction of Pentium 4 processor-M brings to mobile computing the performance users have come to expect from the Pentium 4 processor," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president of Intel's Mobile Platforms Group. "Together with the Intel 845 chipset and advanced power-management technologies, this \[processor\] delivers an optimal balance of high performance and long battery life for today's mobile PCs."
Companies such as Toshiba and Dell are already selling consumer and business-oriented desktop replacement systems based on the new chip. Other PC makers will announce similar systems soon.
