FAQs

Q. How can I check whether my PC is Windows Vista compatible?

A. Microsoft provides a Vista Upgrade Advisor Tool, which you can download at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/default.mspx . The tool provides information about a machine's suitability to run Vista.

Q. How can I enable a file screen for a volume or folder?

A. Windows Server 2003 R2 provides new quota functionality that includes capabilities beyond just limiting how much disk space can be used; the quota feature allows administrators to control what type of files can be written. As discussed in the FAQ "What are the Templates in the Windows 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)?" which you can view at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=50293 , you should first create a template with the settings you want to apply (e.g., the type of files you want to prohibit and the actions to perform if a file screen violation occurs). To apply this functionality, perform these steps:

  1. Start the Microsoft Management console (MMC) File System Resource Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, File Server Resource Manager).
  2. Expand the File Screening Management branch and select File Screens.
  3. Click "Create File Screen" in the Actions pane.
  4. Click Browse and select the path to the folder or volume to which you want the file screen to be applied. You can then select the template from which you want to derive the settings or define custom values, as the figureshows. Click Create.

The file screen detail area will show the new policy, which you can select and edit if necessary.

Q. What do users see if they attempt to write an illegal file type, as stipulated by a file screen?

A. File screens are a new technology in Windows Server 2003 R2, and as such, clients would not understand a file screen violation error, so they'll simply receive an Access Denied message, like the one that the figure shows.

This is why it's important that as part of file screen actions, you configure an email message to be sent to the offender, which will explain why the person got the Access Denied message. The email message could also contain a link to corporate file server usage policies. This step will avoid countless Help desk calls from users asking why they receive Access Denied messages.

Q. How do I enable logging of file screen violations?

A. The Windows Server 2003 R2 File System Resource Management (FSRM) tool can create reports that show all file screening violations. These reports don't read from the System event log, but rather a special XML file that's written to only if you enable the logging of file screen events. To enable this logging, perform these steps:

  1. Start the Microsoft Management console (MMC) File System Resource Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, File Server Resource Manager).
  2. Select File Server Resource Manager (Local) in the left pane and click Configure Options from the Actions pane.
  3. Select the File Screen Audit tab.
  4. Check the "Record file screening activity in auditing database," as the figure shows. Click OK.

Q. Where is the Windows Server 2003 R2 File System Resource Management (FSRM) file screen violation data written?

A
