Lucent Technologies is proposing a standard for 56K modems that would allow high-speed modems from different manufacturers to talk to each other. Until the announcement, Lucent was competing with U.S. Robotics to get a 56K modem to market. Unless an agreement is reached, the modems will be incompatible. U.S. Robotics is attempting to be first to market so that their design will become the de facto standard. Stay tuned, this one will get interesting
