Microsoft Edge Web Payment Request API Available in Preview

Earlier this week the Microsoft Edge Developer blog announced the availability of a preview for the new Payment Request API on Microsoft Edge.

According to Microsoft, this API will be officially released alongside of EdgeHTML 15 in the Creators Update for Windows 10. That third major Feature Update for Microsoft's OS is expected in March 2017.

This API works with Microsoft Wallet on Windows 10 PCs and Mobile devices to improve the checkout process for both sides of the transaction - the customer and the seller.

If you are already running Windows 10 Redstone 2 Build 14986 you can already start to develop these solutions but testing with Microsoft Wallet is not there yet but should be in a future Insider build very soon. Since there are no more testing builds scheduled for 2016 - that is obviously going to be a week or two into the new year.

"In Microsoft Edge, the Payment Request API connects to Microsoft Wallet (with the user’s permission), allowing easy access to payment information associated with the user’s Microsoft Account. Because payment information is securely saved in a digital wallet, shoppers don’t have to navigate through traditional checkout flows and repeatedly enter the same payment and shipping address information repeatedly. The wallet can provide a faster and more consistent experience across websites, which saves shoppers time and effort by allowing them to securely share saved payment information."

Since nearly half of shoppers abandon their checkout carts in the process of an online purchase, the new Payment Request API wants to address those typical shortfalls and help those customers with a smooth transition through the purchasing process.

You can learn more over on the Microsoft Edge Developer blog about the Payment Request API including how it works, how to build your code to take advantage of its features, and displaying the payment UI in Microsoft Edge.

Good Luck with your development of this new feature and capability.
