Why can't I install 16-bit programs on a computer running the 64-bit version of Windows XP?

A. The 64-bit XP platform is backward-compatible with 32-bit programs but not with 16-bit applications. If the installation program is 16-bit, the program won't install. If you attempt to install a program on the 64-bit XP platform, you might receive one of the following error messages:

  • Install.exe is not a valid win32 application.
  • Setup.exe is not a valid win32 application.
