Hotfix for Slow Downloads in ConfigMgr 2012 R2 WinPE Released

A little over a week I ago I reported that Microsoft was working on a fix to eliminate an issue with Configuration Manager 2012 R2 where download times for OS images would peg the CPU at 100%. The hotfix is now released and available from here:

An update is available for the "Operating System Deployment" feature of System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager

In a little less than a week Microsoft CSS was able to identify the issue, determine what needed to be fixed, and produced a workable patch to solve the issue. You have to admit, that's a pretty quick turnaround.

The issue, according to the KB Article (2905002), results from a couple events:

  • The PXE Service Point role has to be enabled, or…
  • Deploy this boot image from the PXE-enabled distribution point is selected.

Also of note, the problem is only exhibited on Distribution Points that are installed on site servers.
