EU Wants A Crackdown on Spam

Spam is on the rise in Europe and a crackdown is bound to ensue directly. The European Commission (EC) said that as much as 80 percent of all spam in Europe is unsolicited.

Sounds about right to me. Of all the email I receive (over 700 messages per day) about 78 percent of it is junk that I never even see, thanks to my spam filters.

Reuter's reports that "the Netherlands \[...\] cut locally generated spam by 85 percent since 2003, thanks to the work of just four full-time staff at an anti-spam agency and 570,000 euros ($748,600) in investment."

The EC said other counties could follow the lead of the Netherlands.
