Deep Packet Inspection

Deep packet inspection is used for a lot of things, such as intrusion detection and prevention, and firewall rule processing. It's also increasingly being used for traffic shaping and snooping.

Over at Ars Technica there's a new article, "Deep packet inspection meets 'Net neutrality, CALEA," that dives into the nuts and bolts of deep packet inspection as well as some of the implications for the future.
