How do I install the Remote Storage subsystem?

A. Windows 2000 includes the Remote Storage subsystem which is used to copy the data in infrequently used files to remote storage media such as a tape while leaving a file place holder still on the disk, when accessed the data is fetched from the tape. It basically works by monitoring volumes and when space dips below a defined level files not accessed for a certain time are moved to a removable mdeia.

The subsystem is supplied with all versions of Windows 2000 server but NOT professional. To install perform the following:

  1. Start the Add/Remove Software control panel applet (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Software)
  2. Select Add/Remove Windows Components
  3. Select 'Remote Storage' and click Next
  4. The files will be copied and you will have to reboot the server

Once the reboot has completed a new 'Remote Storage' component will be added to Administrative Tools and a number of new services configured.
