If you're a long-time reader, then you know I get to do a decent amount of international travel. I have to admit that it's one of my guilty pleasures. Although I despair at spending a long time away from my family, it's usually a big consolation to me when I travel to another country particularly one in which the culture has not been overwhelmed by the U.S. corporate 'monoculture'.
What do I mean by monoculture? Basically, I mean a country where you'll see many more local, traditional resaurants than McDonalds and all the coffee shops are of some local variety instead of a Starbucks.
I think that in my many international travels, I've most enjoyed Dubrovnik in Croatia and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. London, Munich, Montreal, and Copenhagen were also wonderful places to visit.
Consequently, I always get a big kick out of reading or hearing the views of some enlightened foreigner visiting the U.S. Take 'ravelox' blog entry at http://www.livejournal.com/users/ravelox/10526.html.
I find his views on kids and radio to be particularly funny. It's quite a hoot!
