Microsoft MVPs: Always Looking Ahead
by Brian Moran, [email protected]

Here are the 10 most exciting changes that will be happening in Katmai.

Just kidding. That information is kept secret under the non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that constrain MVPs. But at last week’s Microsoft MVP Summit, participants did get a lot of cool new information that they can share in upcoming months. The MVP program does a world of good for the Microsoft community at large and the SQL Server community in particular. Let’s ignore the fact that MVPs answer a tremendous number of questions on the newsgroups. That contribution is easy to focus on. A contribution that’s not as obvious is the reliance of the Microsoft product teams on feedback from the MVP teams.

Visually Design Application Models
Altova announced Altova UModel 2007, software you can use to visually design application models and generate Java or C# code or to reverse engineer existing programs into Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams. This release supports four newly added diagram types (interaction overview, timing, communication, and package) and adds the capability to model XML Schema files in UML. The software features additional support for reverse engineering of Java and C# binary files and the ability to hyperlink elements of UML diagrams to other diagrams or external files. Altova UModel 2007 can also automatically generate sequence diagrams from communication diagrams. Single-user licenses for Altova UModel 2007 start at $129. For more information, contact Altova at 978-816-1600.

Identify Relationships Between Data and Processes
Embarcadero Technologies announced EA/Studio Business Modeler Edition, a business process and conceptual modeling tool that connects data models with business processes to align IT with business objectives. The software shows how data architectures and the database applications in the enterprise directly affect business processes and vice versa. EA/Studio can tell you what processes create, read, update, and delete data. Business models created in Microsoft Visio can be imported into EA/Studio to associate business process models with data models. Pricing for EA/Studio starts at $495 per seat. For more information, contact Embarcadero Technologies at 415-834-3131.

Q&A: Tempdb Affects Query Performance During Autogrow
by Brian Moran, [email protected]

Q. The execution time for a particular stored procedure increases 500 percent when we restart SQL Server. Our tests account for the effect of data caching, and the stored procedure's execution plan doesn't change. We don't see drops in performance from our other stored procedures, and the slow procedure's performance returns to normal eventually. How can we tune the slow procedure's performance?

PUZZLED BY T-SQL: Deadlocks with Custom Sequence
Recently someone posted a question in a public SQL Server programming newsgroup. He got deadlocks when multiple sessions running concurrently were executing a similar stored procedure while working with the serializable isolation level, and he was wondering how could this happen. It’s easy to reproduce such deadlocks, and if you trace the locks acquired and released during the activity, you can figure out how the deadlocks evolve. IN A NUTSHELL: Support Insights
This week, Kevin Kline points to a fascinating interview with SQL Server support team member Bob Dorr. Among other interesting facts, Kevin was impressed by the fact that the team had hired a statistical engineer to perform a wide variety of manipulations against the data concerning bugs and errors, including assigning each incident a value on a customer pain index. Although this might seem like a great idea, even an elementary idea, Kevin is surprised at the number of high-end ISVs that don’t employ such a technique to improve their support systems. Read the interview and let Kevin know your opinions today at
