IMlogic, maker of instant messaging (IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P) management software, has launched a new IM and P2P threat center in conjunction with numerous industry partners.
The new IMlogic Threat Center is designed to provide a comprehensive knowledge base for threats potential such as spam, virus, worms, and other types of malicious code. The public is invited to use the center where people can sign up for a mailing list to receive alerts about new threats or sign up to submit data regarding potential new threats.
IMlogic partnered with Sybari, McAfee, Yahoo!, AOL, and Microsoft to launch the new center. Other supporting partners including Symantec, IBM, Hewlett Packard, EMC2, KVS (a division of Veritas), CipherTrust, jabber, and Anetpo.
When you visit the center you'll see a long list of potential threats along with an assessed threat level and the platforms that might be affected, such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, IRC, etc. Clicking on an item provides a broader set of summary information along with a link to still more information hosted by various anti-virus vendors. For example, if you view the summary information for the Cabir worm, which affects Symbian-based phones, you'll find a link to more information hosted by anti-virus and anti-spam vendor Sophos.
IMlogic also provides a free tool, IM Detector Pro, that can help administrators block all use of IM and P2P on their networks.
