Outlook.com Now Supports IMAP

Outlook.com has already been providing support for Exchange ActiveSync as its primary connection protocol, giving users of Windows Phone, Windows 8 Mail, iOS, Android and Outlook 2013 the ability to retrieve email, but users have longed for the ability to utilize IMAP. Today, Microsoft has announced on the Outlook blog (after first sharing it on Reddit) that IMAP is now available.

Apparently, this has been in the works for a while because several applications are currently rolling out updates to include the new IMAP capability. In the blog post, Microsoft gives details for each of the apps' new capabilities. The apps mentioned are TripIt, Sift, Slice, motley*bunch, Unroll.me, OtherInbox, and Context.IO.

Microsoft also gives the specific IMAP information needed for setting up IMAP for your email client:

  • Incoming IMAP
    • Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Server port: 993
    • Encryption: SSL
  • Outgoing SMTP
    • Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Server port: 587
    • Encryption:  TLS
