Obtaining the .NET Framework

You can get the Microsoft .NET Framework in several ways. Here's a list of .NET Framework locations:

Visual Studio .NET. Microsoft has bundled the .NET Framework into Visual Studio .NET, the developer tool for writing applications in the .NET Framework.

Microsoft's How to Get the .NET Framework Web page. The How to Get the Microsoft .NET Framework Web page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/prodinfo/getdotnet.asp#download) gives you several ways to obtain the .NET Framework and the .NET Framework software development kit (SDK):

  • Download from the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN).
  • Download the .NET Framework Redistributable package.
  • Order the .NET Framework CD-ROM.

The .NET Framework is included in CD-ROM and DVD subscriptions to MSDN. If you're not an MSDN subscriber, Microsoft charges a minimal fee to obtain the .NET Framework. You can find a few more .NET Framework resources on the Microsoft .NET Framework home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/default.asp) and on the Microsoft .NET Framework Setup.exe Bootstrapper Sample Web page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/001/830/msdncompositedoc.xml).
