JSI Tip 9494. Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup may fail when an antivirus or firewall program is running.

If you ignore the warning messages that Visual Studio .NET 2003 Setup or .NET Framework version 1.1 Setup provides, Visual Studio .NET 2003 may install.

In some cases, Setup may hang, or the installation may report failure with a message similar to:

Error 1310.Error writing to file: Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCProjectEngine.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory.

This behavior is generally the result of an antivirus, firewall, or a script blocking program that is interfering with setup.

To workaround this issue, prevent the antivirus, firewall, or script blocking program from running during the installation or Visual Studio .NET 2003 or the .NET Framework version 1.1.

For Windows 2000, use StartUpCPL to prevent these programs from starting.

For Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and later:

1. Start / Run / MSConfig / OK.

2. Select the General tab.

3. Clear the check boxes for the antivirus, firewall, and script blocking programs.

4. Press Apply.

5. Press Close.

6. Shutdown and restart your computer.

After you install Visual Studio .NET, use MSConfig (or StartUpCPL) to check the boxes that you had cleared in step 3 above:

For Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and later:

1. Start / Run / MSConfig / OK.

2. Select the General tab.

3. Check the boxes that you had cleared in step 3 above.

4. Press Apply.

5. Press Close.

6. Shutdown and restart your computer.
