Sony Pushes Consumer-Oriented HD Camcorder

In July, Sony will begin selling a consumer camcorder that can produce HD video. Compared to Sony's previous HD camcorders, the new HDR-HC1 is much smaller and much cheaper, making it ideal for typical consumers, rather than the mobile video professionals targeted by past products. Specifically, the HDR-HC1 is a third the size and half the price of the HDR-FX1, which took the video world by storm last year. Like its predecessor, the HDR-HC1 uses the DV-compatible HDV video tape format and records in widescreen 720p mode. Expect the unit to retail for about $1500 when it goes on sale in the United States.
