Russ Cooper, operator of the NTBugTraq mailing list and surgeon general at TruSecure, released a new tool to prevent malicious email from transporting for viruses, Trojan horses, and worms. The new tool, NoHTML, is an add-on for Microsoft Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002 only that converts HTML-based email messages to Rich Text Format (RTF) or plain text.
According to Cooper, NoHTML works based on message selection within Outlook clients. When a user selects a message, the tool determines whether HTML is embedded in the message, and if so, the tool uses Outlook's built-in message format-changing functionality to convert the message to RTF or plain text format. NoHTML is a small .dll file (7906 bytes) that users can download for free from the NTBugTraq Web site.
