Microsoft Open Sources the OneNote Web Clipper

More than two years ago Microsoft released the OneNote Web Clipper as an extension for web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. More recently it was also released for Microsoft's newest browser, Microsoft Edge, and now the company is making the extension available as an open source project.

Microsoft Open Sources the OneNote Web Clipper

In early 2014, when Microsoft first released the OneNote Web Clipper browser extension its functionality was limited to just grabbing a screenshot of the webpage on a users screen.

Over the course of the last 2 1/2 years the Web Clipper for OneNote has moved through three key cycles of growing and development to become a great tool for OneNote users as they surf the web in their favorite browser.

Last week, on the OneNote Dev Blog, Microsoft shared more of the extensions history but also revealed their plans to make the OneNote Web Clipper an open source project.

"Recognizing the benefits of ‘free’ software, we have decided to open-source the Web Clipper, knowing that we have much to learn from the developer community around us.

From now on, all our work on the extension will be open for everyone to see and participate in. You will be able to use the Issues tool to submit feedback, questions, suggestions, and bug reports. If you want to get your hands dirty and submit code of your own, feel free to submit a Pull Request. The team will be more than happy to have a look!"

For those of you interested in contributing to this new open source software here are the key links:

You are also welcome to report issues and make pull requests to the team to further assist with the development of the OneNote Web Clipper.

Although the web clipper is a small project in the overall scheme of things when it comes to Microsoft's open source support, it is a further acknowledgement that there is greater movement forward with the community involved.

"We are extremely excited to begin this new journey in the development of the Web Clipper, and we hope you can join us in building an extension that note-takers everywhere can be excited about. If you have any questions, feedback, or if you just want to say hi, feel free to send us an email at [email protected]"

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.
