Yet Another Memory Card Format Is Launched

It's probably been at least a few weeks since a new memory card format was last launched, but have no fear: Sony has come to the rescue. Adding to the dizzying array of memory card formats, the electronic giant has teamed up with SanDisk to introduce the Memory Stick Micro--aka M2--card format. The format is aimed at mobile phones and will compete directly with miniSD cards. The M2 is 25 percent of the size of Sony's previously smallest media format, the Memory Stick Pro Duo. The M2 measures an incredibly small 15mm x 12.5mm x 1.2mm and has the potential to store as much as 32GB of data. But don't expect 32GB cards any time soon; initial M2 cards will ship in the 1GB range early next year. The companies will also sell an adapter allowing M2 cards to work with Memory Stick Pro-compatible products. Aren't they just sweet?
