Microsoft Offers Special OneNote Discount for Students
This week, in a bid to make Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 more attractive to students and educators, Microsoft announced special educational pricing for the Microsoft Office System application. The OneNote 2003 Academic Edition full-packaged product (FPP) will cost just $49--one-fourth the usual retail price--when Microsoft releases the product October 21. Curiously, the company doesn't plan to bundle OneNote 2003 in any Microsoft Office 2003 suite versions.
"Students have always been at the forefront when it comes to utilizing new technologies to be more productive, and we want to continue to make it as easy as possible for them to access these tools," John Vail, director of product management for OneNote, said. "We see OneNote as being an incredible application for helping students improve their learning experience. Reaching out to universities to introduce this new product to students and offering special pricing and incentives to educational institutions are just a few examples of how Microsoft is meeting the needs of the academic community."
OneNote 2003 lets you take, organize, and use notes on laptop and desktop computers as well as Tablet PCs--tasks that should appeal to students, although Microsoft is also targeting Tablet PC-toting corporate executives. The product supports standard text-based note-taking as well as Tablet PC digital-ink note-taking. One of the software's more innovative features lets you record audio while you take notes; when you refer to the notes later, you can hear portions of the audio recording that occurred at any point in your notes. Likewise, if you navigate through the audio recording, OneNote 2003 will display the notes you took when you recorded that particular audio. Testers widely heralded the product during the extensive Office 2003 public beta, and Northeastern University is now recommending that all incoming students for the 2003-to-2004 school year use the product to take notes in their classes.
