Q. What are Windows Flip and Windows Flip 3D?

A. Windows Vista has introduced the Windows Flip feature, which is activated using the Alt-Tab key combination and replaces the previous functionality that used to bring up a list of running programs. The new Windows Flip is available only if the graphics hardware supports running the Aero Glass interface and instead of just displaying a list of program icons, displays and updates in real time a live thumbnail. For example, in Windows Media Player (WMP), the movie clip I was watching actually plays as a thumbnail, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/windowsflip.jpg shows.

You can also press Ctrl-Alt-Tab to leave the Windows Flip interface open and avoid having to keep the Alt key pressed. Windows Flip 3D performs a similar function but this time the windows are arranged in a 3D fashion, once again showing live content so any videos continue playing in the view. By pressing Win+Tab or Ctrl+Win+Tab you can leave the Flip 3D running without holding down the Win key. You can use the scroll button on the mouse to scroll through the various running applications. Q. What are taskbar thumbnails in Windows Vista?

A. The Vista taskbar has been given an overhaul. Now when the mouse rests over an item on the taskbar, a live thumbnail of the application content is displayed. For example, the Windows Media Player (WMP) thumbnail would show video in real-time, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/windowslivetaskbarthumbnail.jpg shows; a photo application would display a photo; and Microsoft Word would show the document.

Q. How do I insert a server name as part of an LDAP path?

A. Typically LDAP paths take the form LDAP://ou=testing,dc=savilltech,dc=com. If you want to place a specific server into the LDAP path, add it after the LDAP:\\ and before the distinguished name (DN). For example, for server savdaldc01, the path would become: LDAP://savdaldc01/ou=testing,dc=savilltech,dc=com.

Q. How can I check the error conditions in a VBScript script?

A. By default, a VBScript script will halt on an error. However, you can add the following line at the beginning of the script:

on error resume next

which will cause the script to continue executing even after encountering an error. When this line is in place, after running commands you can check for errors using the following logic:

if err.number0 then wscript.echo err.number, err.description
err.Clear end if

After installing the file, click the plus sign at the top of the Windows Sidebar screen to make the new gadget available. To uninstall a gadget, simply right-click it and select uninstall.
