Sony to Release "Cell" TVs by 2006

Sony plans to introduce smart TVs by 2006, according to the company's CEO. The company will offer TVs that will include the Cell processor, which Sony is developing with IBM and Toshiba. The Cell processor will be as much as 10 times more powerful than conventional computer chips. The Cell is being developed as the brains behind Sony's next-generation console, which will launch around the same time as the Cell-powered TVs. Cell-powered TVs will offer functions similar to those that PCs offer. The Cell processor is expected to show up in many Sony digital electronics, including—possibly—a workstation computer.
