Sony Launches Dual-Layer DVD Burners

Are you finding 4.7GB of DVD storage a bit constraining? Sony has announced a new DVD burner that will support double that capacity by taking advantage of double-layer burning technology. The technology, DVD+R DL, is compatible with and similar to DVD-9, which is currently used for most of Hollywood's DVD-video discs and holds about 7.95GB of data. DVD+R DL stores data in two layers on one side of the disc; the new double-layered discs can store 8.5GB of data and almost 4 hours of MPEG-2 video. Although the DVD+R DL burners will ship soon, they won't be readily available for a while. The new media required for the technology also will be in short supply for the foreseeable future
