Shell Scripting Defined

What is shell scripting?

When you run cmd.exe (command.exe, in Windows 9x), you open the MS-DOS shell environment, in which you can execute shell commands such as Copy, Dir, and Delete. A shell script is a series of shell commands collected together in a .bat or .cmd file. In other words, shell scripts are the same old MS-DOS batch files that some of us grew up with, but with much more functionality. The Windows Help system still refers to shell scripts as batch files.
