Q. What services do I need enabled on my Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster network when using Cluster Shared Volumes?

A. In earlier versions of Windows Clustering, the only service you needed on the NIC used for the cluster communication was TCP/IP. Administrators frequently disabled the File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks and Client for Microsoft networks services. If you're using Cluster Shared Volumes, the situation changes as Cluster Shared Volumes require SMB communication over the cluster network (which is the network that is also used for CSV traffic). You must have the following, as shown below:

  • Client for Microsoft Networks must be enabled on the cluster NIC.
  • File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks must be enabled on the cluster NIC.
  • The Server service must be running on each node in the cluster.
