Q. Is it true that the Exchange 2007 Mailbox role can now run on Windows Server 2008 R2 Core installations?

A. Yes. Because the Server 2008 R2 core installation now includes .NET components, it's possible to install certain Exchange 2007 roles on a core installation.

The full process can be seen in a blog entry by clustering MVP Joachim Nässlander.

It is important to understand that just because it's possible to install Exchange 2007 on a Server 2008 R2 server core doesn't mean Microsoft supports it.
