Q. How can I modify the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Outlook Web Access (OWA) timeout that's applied when OWA has forms-based authentication enabled?

A. By default, when OWA has forms-based authentication enabled, sessions have a 15-minute inactivity timeout for public or shared computers and 24 hours for a private computer. If you're using a public computer to compose a long email message that takes more than 15 minutes to write, the session will time out and you won't be able to send the message. You can change this timeout value (which is the cookie lifetime) by using this procedure:
1. Log on to the Exchange server as an Administrator.
2. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
3. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWEB\OWA subkey.
4. From the Edit menu, select New - DWORD value.
5. Enter a name of PublicClientTimeout and press Enter.
6. Double-click the new value and set it to the desired number of minutes before a timeout (1 to 4320), set the type to decimal, and click OK.
7. To set the timeout period for a private client, repeat the process of creating a DWORD value, but this time enter a name of TrustedClientTimeout and again set the value to the number of minutes before a timeout (The value for private computers should be significantly higher than for public computers.)
8. Stop and restart the World Wide Web (WWW) Publishing service by using these commands at the command line.

Q. Where can I find details about the new ADMX format that Windows Vista and Longhorn Server use?

A. New XML-based ADMX files, which replace the .adm files that earlier Windows versions use, let you control policy settings in Vista and Longhorn Server. An ADMX file is defined as a set of one language neutral file (.admx) and associated ADMX language resource files (.adml). This language independence helps policies display correctly in local administrator environments and tools.

Microsoft has released the schema for the new ADMX format, and you can download it at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=71180 . ADMX files will reside in the Central Store, which is replicated as part of the SYSVOL structure. This approach avoids current problems that occur when using .adm files, which are stored as part of the Group Policy Object (GPO) in the adm subfolder of the GPO and thus cause replication effort between domain controllers (DCs). With Vista and Longhorn Server, when you edit a GPO, the associated ADMX files are read from the Central Store instead of being stored with each GPO that uses them, cutting down on replication. The Central Store is optional and isn't created by default; you must manually configure it.

Q. Where are custom .adm files stored in Group Policy Objects (GPOs)?

A. When you create a new GPO, a folder is created under the Domain Controller's (DC's) Sysvol folder (\Policies\\{\} ). Under that structure, a subfolder is created named Adm that has a copy of all the .adm files that are used as Administrative templates, which by default include conf.adm, inetres.adm, system.adm, wmplayer.adm, and wuau.adm. The files total nearly 3.5M, which is a common issue with GPO replication today; these .adm files are replicated between DCs and replicated for every GPO, which can cause a significant amount of traffic if an ADM file is updated).

When you import a new .adm file into the Administrative templates section of a GPO, the .adm file is copied into the GPO's Adm subfolder, which is then replicated via the File Replication Service (FRS) to all other DCs.

Q. How can I control which .adm files are used when editing a Group Policy Object (GPO)?

A. By default, when you edit a GPO, two things happen: The GPO is read from the domain controller (DC) that hosts the PDC Flexible Single-Master Operation (FSMO) role, and the .adm files that are used are read from the Group Policy Template, which is the file-based portion of the GPO that's stored in the DC's Sysvol folder. It's possible to configure .adm files to instead be loaded from the %windir%\inf folder of the machine editing the GPO. This approach could be useful in situations in which, for example, different language versions of the .adm files exist that will let you perform localized editing to show the localized explanation text instead of the language that created the GPO. To enable this via Group Policy, open a GPO that applies to computers that want to use local .adm files and perform the following steps:
1. Navigate to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Group Policy. 2. Double-click "Always use local ADM files for Group Policy Object Editor."
3. Set to "Enabled" and click OK, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/gpuselocaladm.gif shows.
4. Close the Group Policy Object Editor.

You can also configure this by editing the registry and setting the value of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Group Policy\OnlyUseLocalAdminFiles to 1. Be aware that setting this value means if custom .adm files were used that don't exist on the machine editing the GPO, then some settings might not be displayed (but since settings are actually stored in the Registry.pol file, it doesn't mean they will no longer be applied to Group Policy-targeted machines).

A. To enable detailed logging for the ADS process to the %windir%\Tracing\Adsbuildsvc.log file perform the following steps:
1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Tracing\AdsBuilderSvc.
3. From the Edit menu, select New - DWORD value.
4. Enter a value name of EnableFileTracing and press Enter.
5. Double-click the new value and set it to 1. Click OK.
