Microsoft and VeriSign Partner on PKI

Microsoft and VeriSign announced plans to extend interoperability between Windows Server 2003 and Verisign's Managed PKI Services. The companies said that initially they'll focus on a service that builds on certificate auto-enrollment capabilities of Windows 2003 and Windows XP. The service will ease usage scenarios in which digital signatures are used, such as email, files, and documents. The service promises to increase security for access to networks for remote users, wireless LANs, VPNs, and more. In addition, the companies said they expect to work on another initiative to extend internal PKI capabilities beyond network perimeters. The companies also expect to collaborate on other initiatives that will involve Windows Rights Management (WRM), WS-Security-compliant technologies, and the proliferation of junk mail.
