JSI Tip 9270. How do I prevent the File Association Web service from determining unknown file extensions?

When you attempt to open a file with an unknown extension, you are offered the option to select a program, or to use the Microsoft File Association Web service to determine the application to open.

To disable the File Association Web service on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following command and press Enter:

REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /V NoInternetOpenWith /T REG_DWORD /F /D 1

NOTE: You can disable the File Association Web service on a remote computer using:

REG ADD "\\ComputerName\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /V NoInternetOpenWith /T REG_DWORD /F /D 1

NOTE: To disable the File Association Web service on all the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers in your domain:

@echo off
setlocal
set keyxp3=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
for /f %%a in ('NetViewC.bat') do (
 for /f "Tokens=2*" %%r in ('REG QUERY "%%a\%keyxp3%" /v CurrentVersion^|find "REG_SZ"^|Findstr "5.1 5.2"') do (
  @echo %%a
  REG ADD "%%a\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /V NoInternetOpenWith /T REG_DWORD /F /D 1
  @echo.
 )
)
endlocal
