JSI Tip 8960. Windows XP displays error 1068 when you start the Remote Access Connection Manager service or the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service?

When you attempt to start the Remote Access Connection Manager service, you receive a message similar to:

Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on local computer. Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start.

When you attempt to start the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service, you receive a message similar to:

Could not start the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service on local computer. Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start.

NOTE: Your broadband connection icon may also disappear from Network Connections.

This behavior can occur if the Telephony service is NOT started.

To start the Telephony service:

1. Start / Run / Services.msc / OK.

2. Double-click Telephony.

3. In the Telephony Properties dialog, toggle Startup type to Manual.

4. Press the Start button.

5. Press OK.

6. Close the Services snap-in.
