JSI Tip 8469. When you backup Windows XP, your backup program may incorrectly exclude some files, or it may fail?

I first documented the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup key for Windows 2000.

If any of the Value Names of the FilesNotToBackup sub-key has a malformed REG_MULTI_SZ data value, any backup program that uses this key may incorrectly exclude some files, or the backup program may fail.

If you apply the 842773 - Update package that includes Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) version 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available for Windows XP, and start BITS, it writes a malformed entry at the BITS_metadata Value Name.

There are two ways to resolve this issue:

Replace the BITS_metadata data value

1. Open a CMD.EXE windows.

2. Type the following command and press Enter.

REG.EXE ADD HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup /v BITS_metadata /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*" /f

Download and Install The KB883357 Update

1. Download the WindowsXP-KB883357-x86-enu.exe package.

2. Install the WindowsXP-KB883357-x86-enu.exe package.
