JSI Tip 8442. Outlook Express on Windows XP SP2 blocks images?

When you open an e-mail message in Outlook Express on Windows XP Service Pack 2, images are displayed as a red x placeholder, and the area just above the content window prompts you with:

Some pictures have been blocked to help prevent the sender from identifying your computer. Click here to download pictures.

This behavior occurs because the Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail security option is enabled by default.

To turn of the Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail option:

1. On the Outlook Express Tools menu, press Options.

2. Select the Security tab.

3. Clear the Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail box.

4. Press Apply and OK.

NOTE: Many spammers include a Web beacon, <img src="http://SpammersServer//cgi-bin/program?e=Your_E-mail_Address>, in an image, which notifies the spammer that you are ripe to receive spam.

To download the images for a specific E-mail, press the Click here to download pictures.
