JSI Tip 7702. How do I alter the default container that 'net computer \\ComputerName /add' uses?

When you use the net computer \\ComputerName /add command to add a computer, the operation is performed on a domain controller, and the ComputerName is added to the Computers container.

To alter the default, you must raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2003.

Once the domain has been raised to the Windows Server 2003 functional level, you can use the redircomp command to alter the default computer container:

redircmp <container distinguished name>

Example:

To set the default container to OU=HdqComputers,DC=CompanyName,DC=COM:

redircmp OU=HdqComputers,DC=CompanyName,DC=COM

NOTE: See How do I change the default container that 'net user Username password /add /domain' uses?

NOTE: See How do I use Netdom 2.0 to create a Windows account on a selected Domain Controller?
