When you attempt to map a network share using the FQDN of the server, you receive:
|On Windows 2000||error 53: the network path was not found.|
|On Windows XP||error 1231: the network location cannot be reached.|
You have no problem using the NetBIOS name of the server or its' IP address. You can ping the server by its FQDN, NetBIOS name, or IP address.
This behavior is symptomatic of not starting the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service on the client.
To resolve the Problem:
1. Right-click My Computer and press Manage.
2. Expand Services and Applications.
3. Expand Services.
4. Double-click TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper.
5. Set Startup type to Automatic.
6. Press the Apply button.
7. Press the Start button.
8. Press OK.
NOTE: If the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is Disabled, NetBT's clients, including the RDR, SRV, Netlogon, and Messenger services could stop responding.
