JSI Tip 6428. How do I troubleshoot problems with the Windows 2000 Microsoft Management Console (MMC)?

The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a presentation service for management applications. If you are having problems with the MMC, a snap-in, or a saved console (.msc file), use the following procedure to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Verify that the MMC works without any snap-in but using Start / Run / MMC / OK. If the MMC does NOT open or if it no snap-in can be loaded, perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000, to refresh the MMC.

2. If the problem is with a specific snap-in from a .msc file, load it manually using Console / Add/Remove Snap-in / Add / The <snap-in> / Add / Close / OK. If this is successful, save this console as the .msc file by using Console / Save As.

3. If step 2 cannot load the snap-in, make sure that you are using it in the correct environment by reviewing the documentation. If you are, try the in-place upgrade from step 1.

NOTE: If you perform an in-place upgrade, reapply your latest Service Pack and hotfixes.
