JSI Tip 6245. When you shutdown Windows XP, you receive 'Your system is low on virtual memory'?

When you shutdown Windows XP, you receive:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process memory requested for some applications may be denied.

Iamapp.exe from Symantec Norton Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security has been known to cause this error, if it is executed from the registry.

To workaround this feature:

1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to %ALLUSERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp.

2. Use File / New / Shortcut to create a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall\IAMAPP.EXE.

3. Use MSConfig to clear the IAMAPP check box on the Startup tab, pressing Apply and Close.

4. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.
