JSI Tip 5881. Prevent Windows 2000 clients from making a DFS share available offline.

Windows 2000 clients should NOT attempt to make a DFS share available offline. Support for offline files in a DFS share was NOT added until Windows XP. If a Windows 2000 client enables offline files in a DFS share, they will receive Access Denied errors and unexpected behavior.

If the DFS share is hosted on a Windows 2000 server:

1. Right-click the shared folder and press Properties.

2. Select the Sharing tab.

3. Press the Caching button.

4. Clear the Allow caching of files in this shared folder box.

5. Press OK, Apply, and OK.

If the DFS share is hosted on a Windows .NET server:

1. Right-click the shared folder and press Properties.

2. Select the Sharing tab.

3. Press the Offline Settings button.

4. Check the Files or programs from the share will not be available offline box.

5. Press OK, Apply, and OK.

If the DFS share is hosted on a Windows NT 4.0 server, apply the Q302934 hotfix.
