JSI Tip 5565. NTBackup catalogs when backing up to a file.

Do experience any of the following issues with the NTBackup catalog:

When you attempt to perform a restore, the backup catalog you require is missing?

When you try to catalog the .bkf, it doesn't?

You have many more catalog entries than you have .bkf files?

Windows 2000 backup creates the catalog files at:

%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\catalogs,
where <UserName> is the user who ran the backup.

NOTE: If there are many more catalog files that you have .bkf files for, delete all the catalog files.

Windows XP backup creates the catalog files at:

%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\catalogs51.

NOTE: You may find many old catalog files at the above locations. Delete the ones for which there is no .bkf file.

If you use multiple instances of NTBackup to create and run backup sets, at the same time, one or more catalog file may be missing. To resolve this issue:

1. Close NTBackup.

2. Use Windows Explorer to delete all the catalog files.

3. Start NTBackup.

4. Select the Restore... tab.

5. Right-click File and press Catalog file.

6. Browse to and  double-click the .bkf file that you wish to catalog.

7. Press OK.
