JSI Tip 4392. The Windows XP Recovery Console Bootcfg command.

The Windows XP Recovery Console Bootcfg command can edit or create a boot.ini file. It can scan you hard drives for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 (NT 5.0), and Windows XP (NT 5.1) ,and update boot.ini, or recreate a missing one.

The /add switch scans for all versions of Windows NT and displays the result:

Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
Enter Operating System Load Options: (/fastdetect)
This process adds a new entry, which becomes the default selection.
