When you attempt to install Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, or a component, on Windows XP, or later, you receive:
Error 1926. Could not set file security for file '<cdrom:>\Config.MSI\'. Error: N Verify that you have sufficient privileges to modify the security permissions for this file.
Where N is an error number, like 4 or 5, or ...
NOTE: This may also happen when you try to install Office 2000 on Windows 2000.
This behavior occurs if the System account does not have Full Control on the hard disk where you are installing.
NOTE: On Windows 2000, the Everyone group needs Full Control on the hard disk where you are installing.
On Windows XP:
1. If Simple File Sharing is enabled, disable Simple File Sharing.
2. Start / Run / Compmgmt.msc / OK.
3. Expand Storage.
4. Press Disk Management.
5. Under the Volume heading, right-click the hard disk where you want to install Office and press Properties.
6. Select the Security tab.
7. Select SYSTEM in Group or user names and check the Allow box for Full Control.
8. Press OK.
9. Install Office.
NOTE: Do steps 2-9 for Windows 2000, but use Everyone instead of SYSTEM.
