I'm unable to connect to a secure web page using Internet Explorer.

A. If when you connect to a secure Web page, you may receive the following error message:

in Internet Explorer 4:
An error occurred in the secure channel support.

in Internet Explorer 5:
The page cannot be displayed. Cannot find server or DNS Error.

This is caused if one of the following authentication methods is not enabled:

  • PCT (Private Communications Technology) 1.0
  • SSL (Secure Socket Layer) 2.0
  • SSL 3.0

To resolve this issue perform the following:

  1. Start Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  3. Select the Advanced tab
  4. Check either PCT 1.2, SSL 2.0 or SSL 3.0
  5. Click Apply then OK

Another cause could be if you are connecting through a firewall you have not configure the proxy for https.

  1. Start Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  3. Select the Connections tab
  4. Click 'Lan Settings'
  5. Under the Proxy area click Advanced
  6. Make sure under 'Secure' you have a valid host and port (check with the admin if unsure)
  7. Click OK to all dialogs

If this looks OK but still have problems try re-applying the latest service pack.
