How can I configure the Windows XP and Windows 2000 Start menus to display items in alphabetical order?

A. The XP and Win2K Start menus can maintain a user-configured order; however, you might want to sort the Start menu items alphabetically. To sort the folders, right-click one of the folders in the Start menu and select "Sort by Name" from the displayed context menu.

You can also sort the folders using the registry by performing the following steps:

  1. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder.
  3. Delete the MenuOrder key.
  4. Close the registry editor.
