Dell Drops Quantum

Dell is quietly eliminating the use of Quantum storage systems in its products as it switches over to Dell-designed systems. Dell will start to sell its new PowerVault, which it introduced last week. The PowerVault 715N, 750N, and 755N products will replace the 701N and 705N products, which Quantum designed.

Dell's move mirrors other industry moves as companies (e.g., IBM, Compaq) develop more technology inhouse to reduce their dependence on one another. The change in strategy affects only Dell's lower-end Network Attached Storage (NAS). Last month, Dell and EMC signed a 5-year contract for Dell to sell co-branded EMC high-end NAS products.
