Best practice for creating an organization chart

For the most powerful control over organization chart formatting:

  1. Enable AutoFormat and select a style that is close to your desired result from the Organization Chart Style Gallery.
  2. Use AutoLayout and lay out the employees in the organization chart.
  3. Disable AutoLayout and make any necessary changes to the layout of the chart.
  4. Disable AutoFormat and make any necessary changes to the formatting of individual shapes or connectors.

By doing as much as possible with AutoLayout and AutoFormat enabled, you can save yourself significant time in the creation of the organization chart. Then, disable those features to finalize the layout and formatting. Do not re-enable AutoLayout or AutoFormat, as you will lose any changes you made to individual shapes or connectors.
